Get a Work Permit

If you're under 18 and have accepted a job offer, you'll need a work permit before you can begin working. This page explains the application process, the required documents, and how to obtain your permit through Taunton High School.

Massachusetts Youth Employment Information

  • Before you can receive a work permit, you must first have a job offer from an employer.

    Once you have accepted a position, download the Massachusetts Employment Permit Application and ask your employer to complete the Promise of Employment section.

  • Complete all required sections of the application before bringing it to Taunton High School.

    You'll need:

    • Employer's completed Promise of Employment (Section 2)
    • Parent or guardian signature
    • Student signature
    • Physician's Certificate of Health (students ages 14 and 15 only)

    If you attend a school other than Taunton High School, Taunton Alternative High School, or Taunton Public Virtual Academy, you'll also need a letter of enrollment from your school's Guidance Office.

  • Bring the following with you:

    • Your completed Employment Permit Application
    • Your birth certificate or passport
    • A completed Physician's Certificate of Health, if you are 14 or 15 years old
    • A letter of enrollment, if you attend a school other than Taunton High School or Taunton Alternative High School

    Incomplete applications cannot be processed.

  • Once your application is complete, bring it to the Taunton High School Main Office or Guidance Office.

    Work permits are issued Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

    Before your work permit can be issued:

    • The student must be present.
    • Your application must be complete.
    • All required documents must be submitted.
  • Once your work permit has been issued, provide it to your employer before beginning work.

    Your employer is required to keep the work permit on file for the duration of your employment.
