Taunton High School Electronic Device Procedure for 2025-2026

Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, Taunton High School will transition to a cell phone-free environment, supported by the use of Yondr pouches. This decision follows months of thoughtful discussion by the Electronic Device Subcommittee, which convened five times between January 14 and February 11 to review the school's current electronic device practices. Surveys conducted with students, staff, and families, along with a parent forum held on April 30, 2025, provided valuable insights that informed this decision. The School Council—a group of students, parents, and teachers that meets monthly—also reviewed and discussed this best practice. The School Committee officially approved the transition during its meeting on May 14. Materials shared at the High School Parent/Caregiver Forum can be viewed [here].

This decision is rooted in both educational research and community feedback, which consistently indicate that cell phones have become a growing barrier to student learning and well-being. Studies show that excessive smartphone use is associated with lower academic performance and reduced classroom engagement. Additionally, constant access to social media and digital connectivity has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep patterns among students. Teachers also report that managing cell phone use takes away from instructional time and contributes to distractions in the classroom. Several neighboring districts have already implemented similar policies, resulting in improved focus and fewer classroom disruptions.

Starting next school year, the procedure will be simple. Upon arrival, students will be required to turn off their phones and other personal electronic devices, place them in a Yondr pouch, and securely close the pouch before entering the school building. Students will keep the locked pouch with them throughout the day. At dismissal, students will unlock their pouches at designated stations before leaving campus. In the event of an emergency, families will still be able to contact their child through the appropriate House Office. Accommodations will be provided for students with specific medical needs. A brief video demonstration of how the Yondr pouch system works is available [here].

Throughout the summer, the school will collaborate closely with Yondr to plan for implementation and provide training for staff. Additional information for families, including details about the rollout and what to expect during the transition, will be shared prior to summer vacation.

Taunton High School administration is confident that this shift will promote a more focused, engaging, and safe learning environment for all students. The continued support of the school community is appreciated as Taunton High School strives to create the best possible environment for teaching and learning.
