A School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group of people who advise a school system on health programs. SHACs are made up of people from the community's health and education sectors. They can help create a healthier environment at schools by:
Assessing the school's environment
SHACs can use the CDC's School Health Index to evaluate the school's physical education, physical activity, and nutrition policies.
Conducting a walkability assessment
SHACs can use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Walkability Checklist to identify unsafe crossings and other environmental factors that might prevent students from walking to school.
Implementing healthy policies
SHACs can help create healthy eating and physical activity policies. For example, they can make sure vending machines have healthy options and ensure that school policy doesn't withhold physical activity or use it as punishment.
