Three Taunton High School Student-Athletes Selected for Hockomock LEAP Leadership Program

Taunton Public Schools is proud to announce that three Taunton High School student-athletes, Kennedy MacEarchern, Nevaeh Young, and Madison “Maddie” Crowley, have been selected for the Hockomock League’s Leadership Executive Ambassador Program, known as LEAP. The two-year program identifies rising juniors who demonstrate strong leadership, character, and a commitment to strengthening their school communities. Each school in the league may nominate up to four students, and Taunton High is honored to have three of its nominees chosen for this competitive group.

For Kennedy, learning she had been selected was both meaningful and motivating. She said she felt honored knowing her growth as a leader had been recognized. Nevaeh described feeling excited and proud, noting that the moment reflected her hard work both as an athlete and as a member of the school community. Maddie said she was very excited for the opportunity, especially the chance to learn from student-athletes across the league and challenge herself in new ways.

Each student brings a unique leadership style shaped by their experiences in athletics. Kennedy, a field hockey goalie, describes her on-field leadership as tenacious and vocal, while off the field, she aims to be steady and supportive. Nevaeh balances kindness with determination, leading by example in cross country and track and ensuring her teammates feel heard and respected. Maddie focuses on humility and encouragement, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

Service is a central component of the LEAP program, and each student already has a vision for how they want to give back. Kennedy hopes to introduce field hockey to younger students through after-school clinics, noting that discovering the sport in eighth grade opened new doors for her. Nevaeh wants to strengthen connections between Taunton High and local youth sports programs by mentoring younger athletes and teaching them lessons about teamwork and perseverance. Maddie hopes to lead leadership activities with young children, drawing on her experience working with preschool athletes at TYSL and her desire to help young students build confidence.

The students also shared the mentors who shaped them. Kennedy credits field hockey coach Elizabeth Hathaway for pushing her out of her comfort zone and showing her that leadership is not limited by age or grade level. Nevaeh said her coach taught her that leadership is built through consistency, integrity, and showing up for teammates. Maddie said her dad taught her that character matters more than performance and that being a good teammate during difficult moments is one of the most important qualities an athlete can have.

Athletic Director Rapheal Dowdye praised the students’ accomplishments, saying, “Kennedy, Nevaeh, and Maddie represent everything we hope for in our student-athletes. Their commitment, humility, and willingness to serve others show the strength of our programs and the character of our students. We are incredibly proud to have them represent Taunton in the LEAP program.”

Superintendent John J. Cabral also celebrated their selection. “These young leaders embody the spirit of belonging and excellence in Taunton Public Schools. Their selection to LEAP reflects not only their talent but also their compassion and sense of responsibility to their teammates and community. We know they will make a meaningful impact at Taunton High School and across the Hockomock League,” he said.

As Kennedy, Nevaeh, and Maddie begin their LEAP journeys, they bring with them a shared commitment to service, teamwork, and helping others feel valued. Their leadership strengthens Taunton High School and sets an example for younger student-athletes. Taunton Public Schools congratulates all three students and looks forward to the impact they will make in the years ahead.
