MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics!"

The THS Math Department is committed to achieving mathematical competence through a robust mathematics program that stresses the skills and knowledge students need to ensure 21st century readiness to succeed in work, life and citizenship.

Our vision of 8-12 mathematics education is to provide a comprehensive foundation of mathematics that aligns with the MA Math Frameworks incorporating Common Core State Standards for all students.  Focus is on providing our learners access to rigorous, challenging, and high quality mathematics through the development of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving applications. Effective and personalized instruction supports equitable math education through the integration and application of mathematics for use in our global society to foster our goal of post-secondary pursuits of career and college readiness.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is defined as tasks assigned to students that are to be completed during non-instructional and/or non-school hours. Because education is a lifelong process that extends beyond the school, it is important that students recognize that learning occurs in the home and community. Homework is one means of teaching the necessary skills of independent study and learning outside the school. The Taunton Public Schools' definition of homework is very broad to include not only written work, but also related activities such as review of class notes, textbook readings, long term assignment(s), news reporting, recreational reading, and other activities that are related to classroom work.

Homework counts for approximately 5% of a student's overall grade.

Extra Help and Make-up Schedules

Math teachers schedule extra help and make-up after school a minimum of two forty-minute sessions each week. A calendar of dates is posted outside each math classroom. In addition, teachers announce the weekly schedule. In the event that a meeting conflicts with one of these sessions, the teacher will reschedule to another day when feasible. Students are encouraged to come for extra help. No sign-up is required. Sessions begin at 2:00 PM.

CALCULATOR POLICY

Calculators will be allowed for concept development and/or enrichment. Students will be encouraged to calculate by hand in order to promote their computation skills, especially for honors and A Level classes. Calculators will not be allowed on purely computational activities and tests. Students using calculators are expected to still show work on paper to communicate the thought-process involved with the calculations. Scientific calculators and/or graphing calculators will be provided during lessons for each student as needed.

Recommendations: Every student will be provided a scientific calculator to use during class activities when needed.  Students will be using a scientific (TI-30XS) and/or graphing calculator (TI-84 Plus C) to assist in solving problems in class, on homework, on state testing, on the PSATs, SATs, AP exams, and in college.

MATH TEAM

The THS Mathematics Team competes in the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference of Mathematics League (SMCML). The Math Team is comprised of students of grades 8-12. Each team is made up of five students. Students practice weekly for monthly competitions. Each team has a maximum of two seniors and a minimum of one underclassman. At the end of the season, the qualifying teams go on to the State and New England Competitions.

The THS Math Team meets every Thursday in D203 from 2:00-3:00 PM to prepare for the monthly meets. Meets are held on Wednesdays once a month (October, November, January, February, and March).
