PHILOSOPHY OF THE VISUAL ART DEPARTMENT OF TAUNTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Visual Art Department of Taunton Public Schools believes that art is integral to humanity and is therefore inextricable from the education of the whole child.  We are dedicated to providing our students with art experiences that promote the development of an array of valuable skills that transfer into other areas of life along with an enduring appreciation for visual art and beauty.  Inherent to quality art education are opportunities to develop communication, critical thinking, creative and authentic problem solving, and perceptual awareness while fostering the development of a unique intelligence.  By valuing individuality, we celebrate diversity and prepare our students for non-standardized responses to global challenges.  The study of art stimulates curiosity, invites inquiry, and connects students to a common core of knowledge while developing virtues such as patience and perseverance.

The mission of Taunton High Art Club is to foster an inclusive community of students who share a love of visual art.  We create opportunities to bring art through the school and broader community as cultural enrichment and in service. Through visual art, we make connections to oneself and to others. The Taunton High Art Club is student-run and responsive to the wishes and needs of its members. Membership in THS Art Club is open to all THS students from grade eight through grade twelve, offering opportunities for educational artistic enrichment and activities such as creating art a variety of media individually, in small groups, or as a whole. We cultivate an appreciation of visual art as we create, view, and present
